The Grand Manan Painters group was founded by three Toronto artists, Martha Johnson, Jennifer Hinrichs and Michael Steinhauser to celebrate their love of this unique island landscape, and to exhibit paintings that represent many different approaches to the island environment by artists “from away”. Lying just off the coast of New Brunswick in the Bay of Fundy, the beauty of this sea-bound place is an inspiration for artists. With its historic fishing villages, rocky shores, marshes and meadows it attracts artists from all over Canada and the US. For the past 5 years, Martha, Jennifer and Michael have been returning to Grand Manan Island each July to draw and paint. Martha and Jennifer also hold popular one week plein-air landscape workshops, taking their groups to a different place each day to paint. The work of some of these painters can also be seen here as part of a revolving show of guest artists.
