Michael Steinhauser, born in Brooklyn and working in Toronto, has been drawing and painting since he was twelve years old. As a teenager, he studied oil painting at a studio in Brooklyn. After an academic career in the United States, Europe and Canada, he returned to being an active artist. He undertook further studies in the area of Classical Realism, studying at the Toronto School of Art and with David Leffel of the Art Student League. A member of the Portrait Society of Canada, he was artist in residence at the Masterworks Foundation, Bermuda and the International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Montecastello di Vibio, Italy.
Since his student days in New York, Steinhauser has always been attracted to the sea. Spending summers on Eastern Long Island, he painted the fishing fleet and boating community at Greenport. His fascination with the vivid reality of the sky and sea portrayed by the Rockport artists, led him to paint the rustic scenery of Grand Manan. His paintings go beyond recording the visual phenomena of the natural world. Through their depiction of air and light they bring to life the awesome majesty of nature on Grand Manan.
Steinhauser’s drawings and paintings are in private and corporate collections across North America and Bermuda. They include urban scenes, landscapes, seascapes and commissioned portraits. He is represented internationally by STUDIO VOGUE Gallery in Toronto.
